Andrew Davies wins lifetime award

TV and film writer Andrew Davies has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.

Davies is best known for his 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and his screenplay for 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Sir Terry Pratchett was also honoured for his outstanding contribution to children’s writing at the ceremony.

The writers of Coronation Street won the best continuing TV drama award.

Davies, whose other work includes adaptations of Little Dorrit, Sense and Sensibility and Bleak House, is currently working on a film version of George Eliot’s Middlemarch.

Sir Terry’s Discworld series of fantasy novels is popular with readers of all ages but his first published novel, The Carpet People, was written for children.

Nation, published last year, is also a children’s book. It has recently been adapted for the stage at the National Theatre.

The prestigious annual awards took place on Sunday at London’s Free Word Centre.

The Writers’ Guild is the trade union which represents writers in TV, radio, theatre, books, poetry, film, online and video games.
