R&B singer D’Angelo has been arrested in New York after allegedly trying to pay for sex with an undercover police officer posing as a prostitute.

Police said the star, real name Michael Archer, was arrested on Saturday while at the wheel of his Range Rover after trying to pay $40 (£27.50).

In a statement, he said he had pleaded not guilty and would fight the charge.

The singer had huge success with his debut album Brown Sugar in 1995 and its follow-up, Voodoo, in 2000.

The statement also said he hoped the public would "allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions".

Album release

It is not the first time the singer has had a run-in with the law – he was given a three-year suspended sentence in January 2005 for cocaine possession.

Later that same year, he was also found guilty of marijuana possession and driving under the influence of alcohol, charges that led to his driving licence being suspended for 18 months.

Archer was awarded a Grammy for best male R&B vocal performance in 2000 for Untitled (How Does It Feel) from the album Voodoo.

He is due to release his third album later this year.
