Alex Zane joined XFM in May last year

DJ Alex Zane has his bosses at London radio station XFM of “over-reacting in the extreme” after he was suspended for playing a controversial song.

The track, I Won’t Take No For An Answer, about a man’s unwanted sexual advances towards a woman, was broadcast on Zane’s breakfast show last week.

The DJ and his team, who co-wrote the song, were taken off air for a week.

He told trade magazine Broadcast: “The over-the-top response… would suggest a station being overly cautious.”

XFM said that, in the view of station management, the item was “distasteful and likely to cause offence” and broadcast an apology.

But Zane said no listeners had complained about the song, adding that XFM’s reaction had made the situation look worse after subsequent media reports claimed the song was about rape.
