Hoskins plays a pub landlord in the hit BBC series on 13 July

Hollywood actor Bob Hoskins had to do his own stunts after BBC programme makers mistakenly organised a stuntman who was a foot taller than the star.

"I wound up doing my own stunts because, when the stuntman turned up, he was 6ft 6in (1.98m)," said the star, who stands at just 5ft 6in (1.67m).

"I know how to act – it’s getting bashed up that’s not such fun."

Hoskins, best known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, was filming a one-off performance for BBC drama The Street.

The 66-year-old actor plays a pub landlord who gets involved in a brawl with a local gangster in the episode, which will be screened on 13 July.

The show also features Frances Barber as his wife.

"Frances and I have wanted to work together for years, and now we finally have the opportunity," said Hoskins.
