In pictures: Eco-friendly water solutions for Indian farmers

With 98 million subsistence farmers relying on rain water to grow one crop a year, India has a huge need for small-scale irrigation. International Development Enterprises India (IDEI) believes it has found a solution.
IDEI says its affordable and environmentally-friendly irrigation equipment lets farmers grow two to three crops a year – more than one million families have so far been helped out of poverty, the NGO says.
Treadle pumps like this one enable farmers to irrigate small plots of land where the water table is high. Cheap and simple in design, the pump can be bought for as little as $12.
Networks of perforated plastic tubes deliver water straight to plant roots which can reduce irrigation needs by up to 70%. This Maharashtran famly had a bumper crop of bananas, despite seven months of drought.
Travelling video vans are a popular way to educate villagers about irrigation technology, IDEI says. Bollywood-style films are shown – featuring the treadle pump and drip irrigation – set within a typical storyline of romance, drama and a happy ending.
The films generate interest and questions about technology, which are addressed at follow-up rickshaw and jeep campaigns, farmers meetings and village fair demonstrations.
Farmers who have already had successful harvests after installing the equipment help spread the word.
IDEI says its technologies are used by both men and women. Here women farmers hear about the benefits of the irrigation equipment.

As Haiti tries to rebuild after January’s earthquake, charity Plan International has teamed up with Clowns Without Borders to bring some fun to the lives of Haitian children.
The Clowns form part of attempts to provide psychological and social support to deal with emotional trauma and to try to help children regain a sense of normality.
Children are also encouraged to express themselves through performance, art and group discussions.
The key is actively involving children. “Children often withdraw after a crisis, so it is important to keep them engaged, happy, receptive and even amused,” says Dr Unni Krishnan of Plan International.
Helping children in this way is especially important as they wait for their shattered communities to be rebuilt.
Some aspects of life are getting back to normal, after a fashion, as this school in Jacmel shows.
Clowns Without Borders, founded in Spain in 1993 and now with branches in several countries, aims to offer humour as a means of psychological support. Here, a clown helps a girl come out of her shell.
“Sometimes, laughter really is the best medicine,” says Dr Krishnan, who has been studying the effects of the quake disaster on children in the community of Croix-des-Bouquets.
So far, the Clowns have performed for around 6,000 Haitian children.

Stars out for premiere of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Inception

Marion Cotillard and Leonardo DiCaprio turn out for the UK premiere of their new film, Inception. It’s a sci-fi movie centred around a thief (DiCaprio) who steals people’s dreams and ideas when they’re asleep.
Golden Globe winner DiCaprio, 35, plays Dom Cobb – a dream extractor. He insists he hasn’t fulfilled his film ambitions yet: “I still have a lot to prove to myself. I have a lot of characters that I still want to play.”
Juno actress Ellen Page plays the architect, Ariadne, in the film. She’s in charge of building dream worlds and says it was a pleasure to work with DiCaprio: “He’s absolutely lovely. I have so much respect for him.”
The film follows Leonardo DiCaprio as he’s given one last job. But instead of stealing people’s dreams, he’s given the chance to redeem himself by planting an idea in someone’s head.
Batman actor Cillian Murphy, 34, plays the mark – Robert Fischer, Jr. He’s an heir and Dom Cobb’s final target.
Oscar-winning actor Michael Caine plays DiCaprio’s father-in-law in the film, Miles, as well as his mentor and teacher. He said of DiCaprio: “He’s very good looking but he doesn’t use that to his advantage, he relies on his acting skills.”
Leonardo DiCaprio fans spent hours waiting for the Titanic actor to turn up at London’s Leicester Square. One fan fainted next to the maze-patterned red carpet and bottles of water were handed out to the crowd.
Mama Do singer Pixie Lott, 19, was one of the British stars who turned out for a chance to meet Leonardo DiCaprio and the rest of the Inception cast. Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie was also there.
Peaches Geldof, 21, was also there. The film’s directed by Christopher Nolan, who was in charge of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He said: “I view the film first and foremost as a large-scale thrill ride.”
Danyl Johnson and Jamie Archer from last year’s X Factor put in appearance as well. The film is released in cinemas on 16 July.

Jay-Z and Lily Allen perform at Wireless Festival 2010

Jay-Z headlined this year’s Wireless Festival, held in London’s Hyde Park. He kicked off his set with Run This Town, which he recorded with Rihanna and Kanye West. The rapper’s wife Beyonce turned out to support him as did Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna.
Lily Allen provided support for Jay-Z in one of her final live performances before taking a career break. The 25-year-old told the crowd: “I appreciate that you were jumping up and down because this is probably my last gig in London for some time.”
Tinie Tempah performed on the second stage at the Wireless Festival on Sunday (4 July) before headliners Chase & Status. He revealed he’d finished his debut album: “I really wanted to push the boundaries. I can’t wait for everybody to hear it.”
Chipmunk was there to entertain a crowd of 50,000. Having performed at three shows in 24 hours, he arrived via a special mode of transport: “Yeah, in a chopper. It was fun. Because I was at T4 [on the beach]. I want to do some more.”
Professor Green performed on the second stage on Sunday. The 26-year-old Londoner also sang his duet with Lily Allen Just Be Good To Green on the main stage and her track Smile.
LCD Soundsystem headlined the Saturday night at Wireless. The group were forced to stop their set halfway through after bottles were thrown on stage by some members of the crowd but they started up again shortly afterwards.
Rappers Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott also performed on the Saturday of the three-day festival. Missy Elliott turned up late for her set and was forced to finish early after organisers pulled the plug during Lose Control.
Plan B (Ben Drew) performed on the opening night of the festival (2 July). The festival also saw sets from Taylor Hawkins And The Coattail Riders, Gossip, The Temper Trap and former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.
The Ting Tings played a set on the main stage before Friday headliner Pink. They revealed they’d “pretty much finished” their second album in Berlin and would start working on their third record next year.
Pink headlined the opening night of the Wireless Festival. She used the same set from her world Funhouse Summer Carnival tour, using a trapeze wire to glide down on to the stage from a box suspended above the stage.

Rockers Muse have picked up the Silver Clef honour at a lunchtime awards ceremony at London’s Hilton Hotel. The awards are held each year to raise funds for music therapy charity Nordoff-Robins.
Boy band JLS, meanwhile, picked up the best newcomer prize at the awards, hosted by former X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne.
Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who performed at Glastonbury at the weekend, was named the ambassador of rock.
At the age of 93, World War II sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn – winner of the icon award – was the oldest star to be honoured.
Tony Bennett, who performed at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday night, won the lifetime achievement award.
And pop trio Scouting For Girls, whose hits include Sheâ€™s So Lovely and Elvis Ain’t Dead, won best British band. Other winners included Kelis, Dizzee Rascal and Russell Watson.

Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries is dedicated to the range of scientific discoveries and mistakes by experts at the National Gallery in London.
Experts originally thought this artwork was created by Domenico Ghirlandaio but after further inspection, it was discovered that Andrea del Verrocchio painted the Virgin and his assistant Lorenzo di Credi completed the work.
An Old Man in an Armchair was mistaken as a Rembrandt artwork but on closer inspection, it was determined to be the work of an unknown student who was a fan of the artist.
Sometime in the 1700s, a portrait of Alexander Mornauer by an known German artist was altered to resemble a work by the more famous artist Hans Holbein. It has since been restored.
A Dead Soldier was originally thought to have been painted by Spanish artist Diego Velazquez but that has since been discounted. The true identity of the artist has still not been determined.
Until 1991, only copies of The Madonna Of The Pinks were known, but infrared work on this piece unveiled markings that show this work is definitely a Raphael original. The works are on display from 30 June until 12 September.

Across the world, devotees of pop star Michael Jackson have been remembering him on the first anniversary of his death. This fan lights a candle of remembrance in Berlin.
Jackson fans came to London’s O2 Arena to write dedications on a wall. He had been due to perform at the venue shortly before his death.
Michael Jackson impersonator Navi also put in an appearance at the London music venue.
The late star’s reach was truly global. Young people in Jammu, India offer prayers of remembrance to Jackson.
Prisoners in the Philippines performed a tribute to the late musician. Their routine made them an internet sensation back in 2007.
A poignant tribute to Jackson was left outside the Apollo Theatre in New York, where the singer won a talent contest with his brothers.

Madagascar has an abundance of natural riches but these are being used up at an alarming rate. When the land fails to provide, the Malagasy turn to the ocean. These farmers-turned-fishermen trawl for fish using mosquito nets.
Madagascarâ€™s depleted forest system still provides the main livelihood for more than 70% of the population. This wood from Spiny Forest is used for everything from fuel to medicines.
Many people are being forced to exploit natural resources in order to survive. A rock breaker ekes out a living creating gravel and stones for buildings and roads in Bezavo, in the south of the country.
For many Malagasy, everything that is needed to sustain life comes directly from the land. Women gather swamp reeds for mats, baskets and hats – a vital component of village industry.
Rice farmers prepare their field for planting by using cattle to soften the muddy earth so the rice shoots will take hold deeper in the soil. This is an ancient Malagasy tradition called “magnosy”.
Women bathe and brush their teeth in a local swamp. The land and its resources are used for virtually all aspects of their lives, even if their health could be threatened.
Men pack their baskets with fresh catches of the day. These “fish-runners” then run for more than three miles (nearly 5km) to trucks that will take the fish to markets around this part of Madagascar.
Giant brick kilns, fuelled by firewood, are a common sight – and another cause of the rapid deforestation in the area. Workers bake clay into bricks, their faces obscured by smoke.
Rituals surrounding death remain an important part of the culture in south-east Madagascar. But these burial grounds, once private places hidden by forest, are now exposed. [Photos: Ed Kashi, BBC Focus on Africa magazine]

Catherine Zeta-Jones appeared shocked to be among winners at the 64th Tony Awards, taking best actress in a musical for Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night of Music. She stars alongside Murder, She Wrote actress Angela Lansbury in the Broadway hit.
The 40-year-old Welsh actress was among performers on the night, singing Send In The Clowns. Accepting her award, Zeta-Jones said: “I really do feel like Cinderella.”
Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison, of hit TV show Glee, also performed. Michele, who plays Rachel Berry, has previously taken the lead role in Spring Awakening on Broadway while Morrison, who plays teacher Will Schuester, starred in Hairspray.
Big individual winners were Denzel Washington – best actor in a play for Fences – and co-star Viola Davis, who was best actress. Zeta-Jones was joined in the winning line-up by fellow Briton Douglas Hodge, named best musical actor for La Cage Aux Folles.
Hodge performed alongside the cast of La Cage at the Radio City Music Hall ceremony. His fellow performers included Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, who was also nominated for best actor in a musical.
Washington, pictured with British actress Dame Helen Mirren, now has a best actor Tony to go with the best actor Oscar he won in 2002 for Training Day.
Award presenters on the night included Will Smith, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Holmes were perhaps the most mismatched of the evening.
They were at the Tonys to present Scarlett Johansson with her best supporting actress award for her Broadway debut in A View From A Bridge. “Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be on Broadway and here I am,” she said.

The first World Cup to be held on the continent of Africa kicked off in style with a huge televised concert in Johannesburg on the eve of the global sporting event.
Thousands of people braved near freezing temperatures to descend on Orlando Stadium in Soweto, the country’s biggest township, for an evening of music by both South African and international acts.
Colombian singer Shakira was one of the headline acts – performing the official World Cup anthem “Waka Waka (this time for Africa)” with South African group Freshly Ground.
US hip hop group the Black Eyed Peas performed a medley of their hits.
Grammy Award-winning singer Angelique Kidjo, from Benin, dueted with US singer-songwriter John Legend.
Fifa President Sepp Blatter, here in a white scarf on stage with South African President Jacob Zuma, described the event as “the real kick-off”, adding: “Football is not only a game. Football is connecting people.”
A suitably-attired Archbishop Desmond Tutu welcomed football fans from around the world. “For Africa is the cradle of humanity, so we welcome you home,” he said.
French footballer Patrick Vieira appeared on stage with the World Cup – the prize the 32 national teams will be fighting for in the coming days.
But Friday’s opening ceremony has been overshadowed by news that the 13-year-old great-granddaughter of Nelson Mandela died in a car crash on her way home from the concert.

In Pictures: The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition

The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition is billed as the “world’s largest open submission contemporary art exhibition”. Established and unknown artists alike submit their work for consideration. This year’s show features 1,267 exhibits.
More than 11,000 entries were made for this year’s show, with aspiring artists queuing up outside the London gallery to submit their work. Their work will be displayed alongside paintings like these, by Tuner-nominated artist Gillian Ayres.
Silver Streak is a work made entirely from coat hangers. The King Kong figure, by artist David Mach, is priced at £265,000.
A lady stands alongside Self Portrait After Messerschmidt, by artist Tony Bevan. Works have been selected this year around the theme “raw”.
The exhibition features painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film. This glass and wood piece, by Ruth Dupre, is entitled Butchery.
A visitor looks at a painting called Untitled No 39 by Callum Innes, a Scottish abstract painter and former Turner Prize nominee. The Summer Exhibition runs from 14 June – 22 August.
Exhibition co-ordinator Stephen Chambers compared Yinka Shonibare’s Crash Willy to children’s cartoon Wacky Races. Shonibare hit headlines recently when he placed a bottled ship on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth.

Josie, a 25-year-old sales rep from Bristol, was the first of 14 housemates to enter the Big Brother house for the final series of the Channel 4 reality show. Josie, who was expelled from two schools, says she once mooned at a monk in Thailand
Next in was 40-year-old Steve, from Leicester, who has eight children. The ex-serviceman, who lost both his legs while serving in Belfast, is a transatlantic yacht racer and a volunteer wheelchair basketball coach.
Writer and broadcaster Ben, 30, from London, likes politics and getting his hair done. He says he is single apart from two relationships he is “not supposed to talk about”.
Beyonce lookalike Rachel, 23, from Nottingham, likes checking herself out in the mirror but dislikes people judging her by her looks. She also likes being ladylike but dislikes being faithful.
Nathan, 25, who describes himself as Yorkshire’s answer to Liam Gallagher, once walked through Leeds with no clothes on, protecting his modesty with takeaway menus. The joiner, who lives with his grandparents, says he is the life and soul of the party.
Christian minister David, 39, from Pontypool, recently organised an “extreme religious” event – Sloshfest – on Barry Island. He believes he once visited the Sun.
Caoimhe – pronounced keeva – is referred to by her mum as her “favourite slapper”. She is confident with the men saying: “I just strut my stuff and heads turn.”
Govan, a 21-year-old voluntary worker, now lives in London but still takes his washing back to his grandmother in his home city of Leicester. â€œI bring intelligent conversations but at the same time I can be silly and funny,â€ he says.
Shabby – real name Keeley – is a squatter who dislikes oppression and Keira Knightley. The 24-year-old filmmaker eats food thrown away by supermarkets and says she was an elf in a former life.
Professional dancer Ife – pronounced iffy – once stayed indoors for 10 days because she could not properly draw her eyebrows on. The 25-year-old, from Milton Keynes, says she has danced with Cheryl Cole.
John, 24, from Melbourne, Australia, changed his name to Achilles four years ago. He changed it back quite quickly. John uses an anti-ageing lamp to stop wrinkles.
Sunshine, whose real name is Yvette, says she knows little about politics but hopes one day to become prime minister. The 24-year-old medical student, from Peterborough, is looking forward to being known as Doctor Sunshine.
Corin, a shop assistant from Stockport, says she is often mistaken for Katie Price. She likes using hair pieces, being tanned and dying her beauty spots.
The final contestant, Italian-born Mario, 28, from Essex, was forced to dress as a mole before entering the Big Brother house. He is a huge fan of the show and owns the diary room chair from the seventh series of Big Brother.

Singer David Bowie arrived with his wife Iman at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards in New York.
Later in the evening Iman was named the winner of the fashion icon award.
Designer Marc Jacobs took the top prize at the gala, scooping the award for top talent in womenswear. Actress Jessica Biel congratulated him backstage.
Michael Kors received a standing ovation for his lifetime achievement prize, which was presented to him by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow arrived wearing one of Kors’ dresses.
The highlight of the evening was actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen.
The Olsen twins, who started out as actresses and TV presenters, have their own clothing line in the US for girls aged up to 14.
Jewellery designer Alexis Bittar took home the accessory designer of the year prize.
Jason Wu, who designed Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown, was picked as the top emerging talent in womenswear.
British designer Christopher Bailey, the chief creative officer of Burberry, was honoured with the prestigious international award. The award was presented by Donna Karan,

Whitehall satire The Thick Of It was the big winner at the Bafta TV awards, scooping three prizes. Star Peter Capaldi was given his best male comedy performance award by Glee actress Jane Lynch. Their characters share a taste for vicious verbal putdowns.
Ant and Dec won their first ever Bafta – after more than 20 years in the business. “I really, really, really wasn’t expecting that,” said Dec on stage. Earlier, the duo told the BBC they had a plan to deal with disappointment: “If we lose, we booze.”
Julie Walters won her seventh Bafta for her portrayal of Labour politician Mo Mowlam (right). Accepting her award, Walters thanked “Mo’s family and friends who were massively supportive … and Mo, what a woman”.
Simon Cowell was recognised for his contribution to developing new talent. In a playful mood, he thanked himself on stage, and made fun of his fiancee, Mezhgan Hussainy, and co-star, Amanda Holden, in the press area.
Cowell’s TV show Britain’s Got Talent also won a Bafta – its first – for best entertainment programme. The trophy recognised last year’s series, won by dance troupe Diversity, pictured here with a mysterious interlopper…
Having been rumbled, Lenny Henry was on hand to present South Bank Show host Melvyn Bragg with the Bafta Fellowship. “I wanted to put popular arts alongside the opera and the ballet,” said Lord Bragg. “Put it all in the same bag and see what happened”.
Soap stalwarts Barbara Windsor and Helen Worth battled it out in the best continuing drama category. In the end, EastEnders continued its winning streak from last month’s National Soap Awards.
Graham Norton hosted the show, joking that he needed the money “now that my lodger David has been thrown out of the government”. The star also referenced the upcoming World Cup, quipping: “Is it just me and Cheryl Cole that couldn’t give a toss?”
Among the absentee winners were the cast of stylish US advertising drama Mad Men, which picked up best international show. Best actor Kenneth Branagh was also unable to attend the ceremony.
Helena Bonham Carter wowed the red carpet in a typically offbeat red dress with exposed garter straps and a tiny, funereal hat. The star was up for best actress after her portrayal of author Enid Blyton on BBC Four, but lost to Julie Walters.
Comedy duo Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong won best comedy programme for their self-titled sketch show. Miller celebrated backstage in the style of the pair’s wartime pilot characters: “It’s well nang blood, isn’t it?”
The cast of Channel 4 sitcom The Inbetweeners picked up the only audience prize of the night, beating prime time behemoths like The One Show, Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor in the process.

Stars out for The A-Team premiere in Hollywood

The cast of the new A-Team film pose on the red carpet at the film’s premiere in Hollywood. Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Sharlto Copley, Liam Neeson and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson appear in the movie version of the 80s TV series.
Star Wars actor Liam Neeson plays Colonel John Smith, or Hannibal. The character was played by George Peppard in the original series. He’s the leader of the former US special forces team. His favourite phrase is, “I love it when a plan comes together”.
Sharlto Copley plays the part of Captain H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock. His character was played by Dwight Schultz in the 80s TV series. He’s the only member of the team who wasn’t convicted of a war crime and is the group’s pilot.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is a mixed martial artist and plays the role of Sergeant B.A. “Bad Attitude” Baracus. The character was played by Mr. T in the 80s and is the team’s mechanical genius. He’s also afraid of flying.
Bradley Cooper from The Hangover plays Lieutenant Templeton “Faceman” Peck. His part was played by 2007 Celebrity Big Brother contestant Dirk Benedict in the 80s series. He’s the con man of the team who can talk his way into anything.
Next actress Jessica Biel plays the role of Captain Carissa Sosa. She’s a US army general who’s chasing the team of “soldiers of fortune” and is also the ex-lover of Face.
The A-Team film follows the team in the Middle East rather than after the Vietnam war, as in the 80s TV series. But like the original they’re still a group of former soldiers who are “accused of a crime they did not commit”.
Good Will Hunting actress Minnie Driver was among other A-list Hollywood stars on the red carpet in Los Angeles. She had her first baby in September 2008 but her latest film Motherhood bombed in cinemas.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall actress Kristen Bell also put in an appearance at the premiere. Her latest film When In Rome made more than $37 million (£25m) around the world.
The youngest ever Oscar winner, Adrien Brody, turned up on the red carpet as well. The night before he was out promoting his latest film, Splice, with Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. The A-Team is released in UK cinemas on 28 July.

After 37 years long-running comedy Last Of The Summer Wine is being axed. First broadcast on BBC One in 1973, the classic line-up of characters – Foggy, Compo and Norman Clegg – became a hit with audiences.
Michael Bates (right) was part of the original line-up. He played Cyril Blamire, a former Royal signals sergeant, but ill health forced the actor to leave after the second series of the show.
Kathy Staff played Nora Batty until 2008 when she passed away. The character became known for her trademark rumpled stockings and curlers in her hair, as well as being Compo’s object of affection.
Over the years the show was adapted so it could continue after the deaths of various cast members. When Bill Owen passed away, his on-screen character was given a funeral and Owen’s real life son was brought in to play Compo’s long lost son.
Each episode revolved around the awkward situations the three men always found themselves in, which usually resulted in Compo clowning around.
A whole host of well known actors have appeared in the show including Sir Norman Wisdom (pictured), John Cleese, Eric Sykes and Trevor Bannister.
Veteran actress June Whitfield (centre) also joined the cast in 2001 and played Delphi. The show’s female characters have also had a strong pedigree.
The show is the UK’s longest-running comedy programme. There had been speculation for many years that the sitcom would be retired, but it was continually commissioned. The final series will be screened later this year.
The sitcom was written by Roy Clarke and was so successful it garnered a TV prequel, several novelisations and stage adaptations.
The famous and instantly identifiable music was composed by Ronnie Hazlehurst, who also penned theme tunes for Are You Being Served? and Yes Minister.
In 2008 comedian Russ Abbot joined the show for its 30th series. He plays a former milkman who sometimes thinks of himself as a secret agent.
BBC One will celebrate the end of the long-running series with special editions of Countryfile and Songs Of Praise. Both will come from Holmfirth, the village in Yorkshire where the series has been filmed since it began in 1973.
