Charlie Sheen was released from the Pitkin County Jail on bail

Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller Sheen – who last week accused him of putting a knife to her throat – want to reconcile, their lawyers say.

The actor spent much of Christmas Day in jail after his wife told police he threatened to kill her during a row in the ski resort of Aspen, Colorado.

Her lawyer Yale Galanter said the couple were still "very much in love".

Meanwhile, Mr Sheen has asked a court to lift a restraining order banning him from seeing his wife.

Mr Galanter said: "They want to try to work it out and want to have the best shot at doing that."

Mr Sheen’s lawyer, Richard Cummins, confirmed that his client was also keen on a reconciliation.

Police call

On Christmas Day, Ms Mueller Sheen, 32, told police the argument started after she said she wanted a divorce.

Arrest papers quote her as saying he held her down on the bed, held a knife to a throat and told her: "You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I’ll kill you."

She is also quoted as saying that he told her: "I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won’t leave any trace."

In a recording of a call to police, Ms Mueller Sheen can be heard saying that her husband had threatened her with a knife and that, "it’s happened before".

Mr Sheen denies threatening his wife with a knife and told officers they had slapped each other on the arms and he had snapped two pairs of her glasses in front of her.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault, menacing and criminal mischief before being released on $8,500 (£5,300) bail. A restraining order was also imposed.

Mr Galanter said Ms Mueller Sheen was standing by the account she gave to police but added: "Wives think the cops are going to break something up and they don’t realize the husband is going to be taken to jail."

He added: "Whatever was said and whatever happened, I’m chalking it up as one really bad night."

‘No bearing’

Mr Sheen’s request to lift the restraining order will be heard next Monday.

Deputy district attorney Arnold Mordkin said the outcome of Monday’s hearing would have "no bearing on whether or not we would file charges" against Mr Sheen.

That decision was not expected before February, he added.

Ms Mueller Sheen has stayed in Aspen with the couple’s twin boys, who were born in March.

Mr Sheen – the son of actor Martin and brother of actor-director Emilio Estevez – married, for the third time, in May 2008. It followed an acrimonious divorce from actress Denise Richards in 2006.

The star of hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, the actor was named America’s highest paid TV star in 2008.
